golfers are liars, prodigious, flamboyant
truly beautiful liars
as I made my way
from the back of the course today
I stopped at almost every foursome
I asked about their scores
whether or not they were having fun
I heard stories where birdies were flying
like it was some sort of Alfred Hitchcock movie
eagles were soaring like some National Geographic special
and par had become
a rememberance of things past
the sound of mammoth Ping clubs tinked loudly
battling an onslaught of Big Bertha's
cleats were bared, beer guzzled
threats were made and bribes offered
all of this in an afternoon of delightful comraderie
the lies of golfers are harmless play
the serendipity of language that comes with nuance
and confidence
and this is why we liars are here
to tell stories, play some golf
and help pave the way for those who can't
literacy is a gift
the education we provide for those behind us
becomes our legacy
a society should be measured by how we treat
our least fortunate citizen
how we laugh at our most gregarious golfer
