a sign of fall
"a very small summer" bukowski
his belly pulled in
and macho pushed out
he thought that she looked a little tired
perhaps a little older than he might have liked
and he noticed right off
that she liked the wine
and there was that sadness
he knew that none of it mattered
at best
he could hope for an easy night
hope that he could stay hard
and for her to remain enthused
and that the wine wouldn't beat them both
he asked her to dance
the music loud
he couldn't keep the beat
and she was telling him something
but it wasn't getting through
the night was winning
winter coming on
in the cab
she kissed him with her cigarette tongue
and he rested his hand on her thigh
the cabbie didn't say anything
in the morning
on his way to the bathroom
he noticed the first leaves of autumn
falling to the ground
a gentle wind dancing lightly
and he thought of the coming cold weather
