the betrayal
it's in this airport bar
and she's in peculiar form
because her husband is fooling around with a teenager
and her oldest just turned ten
and she's with her friends from work I
and wondering if
waiting for
hoping for someone to say hello
or more
and later when he sits and says nice things
(although anything would do)
and puts his hand on her knee
and asks if she wants to be his lover
she nods and sips her drink
and already she regrets
her uneasiness
and is unsure
uncertain
and so desperately needing something
and later in her room
in the darkness
she finds the warmth of his touch
and the coolness of his intentions
too much to bear
and a tear is mistaken for misplaced pleasure
and he smiles
admiring his talents
imagining the pleasure he bestows
as she starts to cry
he is confused
as he stutters into the brightly lit hallway
tucking in his shirt
and then smiles
as he makes
for the elevator
